How Long and How Often Should I Use a Sauna?

2 minute read

Quick answer:

Start slow with 10–15 minute sessions until your body adjusts and work up to 20–30 minutes for regular use. 2–4 sessions per week are ideal for general wellness. Step out immediately if you feel dizzy, weak, or overheated.

How Long Should You Use a Sauna?

If you’re new to infrared or traditional saunas, start with short sessions of 10–15 minutes. This gives your body time to adjust to the heat and helps prevent dizziness or dehydration. Saunas can get pretty hot. Here’s a quick breakdown that’s easy to remember.

  • Traditional saunas: These are the hottest. The air temperature usually ranges between 70°C and 93°C.

  • Infrared saunas: These stay cooler, typically between 43°C and 57°C.

Once you’re comfortable, you can slowly increase your sessions to 20–30 minutes. Most people find this range ideal. It’s long enough to relax, sweat, and enjoy the benefits without feeling drained.

How Often Should You Use a Sauna?

Doctors suggest aiming for 2–4 sessions per week. This is usually enough to help support better circulation, deeper sleep, and lower stress. If your goal is muscle recovery or easing soreness, you can go more often. Just be sure to stay hydrated and listen to your body.

If you’re mainly using a sauna for stress relief or skincare, shorter, more frequent sessions can work just as well.

How to Tell When You’ve Had Enough?

A good sauna session leaves you feeling relaxed, warm, and refreshed. If you start to feel overheated, step out and cool down. Everyone’s tolerance is different, so let comfort guide you rather than the clock.

Always drink water before and after, and give your body a few minutes to cool off once you’re done.
