How Big Are Swim Spas and How Much Space Do I Need?

3 minute read

Most people assume swim spas are huge. They’re not small, but they’re a lot more manageable than a full pool. Once you see the actual sizes, it starts to feel much more realistic for a backyard setup.

How Big Is a Swim Spa?

Sizes vary by model, but most range from around 5–6 m long and 2–2.3 m wide. Our swim spas come in a range of sizes. Some are compact enough for a modest backyard. Others are built for serious swimmers who want the full experience.

With Alpine Spas, you can pick the size that fits your space, from our 6-person swim spas to a more compact 3-person swim spa.

What Does Single Zone and Dual Zone Mean?

Single zone swim spas have a single body of water at a single temperature. You swim and soak in the same space. These models are more compact and cost less.

Dual zone swim spas are split into two sections. One side is for swimming, and the other side is for soaking. Each zone has its own temperature control. You can keep the swim zone cool and the spa zone warm at the same time. These models are longer but give you more flexibility.

How Much Extra Space Do You Need?

You can’t place a swim spa right up against a fence or wall. You’ll need some space around it so it’s actually usable. As a general rule, allow at least 60 cm on each side. That gives you enough room to move around the spa, clean it, and access the controls.

You’ll also need space at one end for the cover. Swim spa covers lift and fold back, so they need clearance behind the unit. Don’t forget about the entry. Leave room for steps so getting in and out feels easy, not cramped.

It’s also worth thinking about delivery early. The spa needs a clear path into your yard, so check the width of your gate and any tight corners. This is something we help with across New Zealand.

Quick Way to Picture It

  • Allow about 60 cm around the sides

  • Leave space for steps and entry

  • Make sure the cover can open fully

  • Check access for delivery

What Kind of Base Do You Need For a Swim Spa?

A swim spa is heavy when it is full of water. You need a base that can handle that weight. A reinforced concrete pad is the best choice. It should be level and extend past the spa on all sides.

The pad needs to support the total weight of the spa, the water, and the people inside it. For most models, that is several tones. Do not try to put a swim spa on bare ground or unbraced decking. Get a solid base sorted first. It saves you problems later.
